Why call an electrician

Most holiday light problems are electrical problems

The outdoor outlet trips every time it rains

Water in an old receptacle or a cracked cover trips the GFCI and kills the whole display. A weather-resistant GFCI with a proper in-use cover fixes it for good.

Extension cords running across the yard

Daisy-chained indoor cords through a cracked garage door are a trip hazard and a fire risk. A new exterior outlet where the lights actually start is often a quick add.

The breaker trips when the display comes on

Older incandescent strands pull a lot of power, and outdoor outlets often share a circuit with the garage. We check the load and add a dedicated circuit if it needs one.

The timer is wrong half the season

Cheap plug-in timers drift and do not track sunset. An outdoor-rated astronomic timer or photocell turns everything on at dusk without you thinking about it.

Nobody wants to be on the roof

Two-story rooflines and icy gutters are where holiday injuries happen. Our crew works off proper ladders with fall protection, so you stay on the ground.

What we hang

Rooflines, trees, porches and everything you plug them into

Straight, evenly spaced lines along the gutters and peaks are what make a house look finished from the street. That takes the right clips, the right ladder and a crew that has done it before.

We hang rooflines, gutter lines and peaks, wrap trees and bushes, light porch columns and railings, and line walkways. Before anything goes up we look at where the power is coming from, how much the display is going to draw, and whether the outdoor outlets can handle it. If they cannot, we fix that first so the lights stay on all season.

The part nobody sees

Outdoor power that does not quit in December

A display is only as good as the outlet it is plugged into. This is where a lighting crew stops and an electrician keeps going.

Outdoor receptacles need GFCI protection and a weather-resistant device with an in-use cover that stays closed with a cord plugged in. A lot of Tri-Cities homes have one old outdoor outlet on a shared garage circuit, so a big display trips it the first wet night. We can replace tired outlets, add a new one under the eaves or at the front of the house, put the display on its own circuit, and set up an outdoor-rated timer so it comes on at dusk on its own. Any permanent electrical work is done to code and permitted where Washington requires it.

Permanent holiday lighting

Lights that stay up and come on with a tap

Tired of hanging and pulling the same strands every year? Permanent lighting mounts in a low-profile track along the eaves and is close to invisible during the day.

It is wired to its own controller, so it can run warm white for the rest of the year and holiday colors in December, all from your phone. Because it is a permanent electrical install, it should be done by a licensed electrician with the power supplies in the right place and the circuit sized for it. Ask about it when you call and we will tell you whether it makes sense for your house.

How it works

From the first call to lights on

1

Call or send the form

Tell us what you want lit and roughly how big the house is. We set a time to come out.

2

We measure and check the power

Rooflines get measured, trees and bushes get counted, and we look at the outdoor outlets and the circuit behind them.

3

You get a written price

One price covering the lights and any outlet, circuit or timer work. You approve it before anything goes up.

4

We hang it and switch it on

Lines go up straight, everything gets tested, and the timer is set so the display runs itself the rest of the season.

They always showed up right on time and were very kind. They explained everything they were doing and let us know the quote upfront. Great team of people!

Gale Electric was absolutely great for installing my Level 2 EV Charger. I called probably about 6-7 companies to get quotes on installation. Gale Electric was fairly priced and the most responsive.

FAQ

Christmas light installation questions

How much does Christmas light installation cost in the Tri-Cities?
It depends on the length of the rooflines, the height of the house, how many trees and bushes you want lit, and whether any outlet or circuit work is needed. We come out, measure, and give you a written price before anything goes up. Estimates are free.
When should I book Christmas light installation?
The earlier the better. Schedules fill up fast once November starts, and an October or early November booking gives you the widest choice of dates. Call (509) 205-8146 and we will get you on the calendar.
Why hire an electrician instead of a lighting company?
Most holiday lighting problems are electrical problems: outdoor GFCIs that trip, overloaded circuits, missing exterior outlets and bad timers. A licensed electrician can hang the lights and fix the power behind them in the same visit, and any permanent outlet or circuit work is done to code.
Can you add an outdoor outlet for my Christmas lights?
Yes. Adding a weather-resistant GFCI outlet with an in-use cover on the front of the house or under the eaves is a common add-on. It gets rid of the extension cord through the garage door and gives you a dedicated spot to plug the display in every year.
Do you install permanent holiday lighting?
Ask us about it when you call. Permanent lighting mounts in a low-profile track along the eaves and is wired to its own controller, so it can run warm white most of the year and holiday colors in December. We will look at the house and tell you whether it makes sense.
Do you work in Kennewick, Richland, Pasco and West Richland?
Yes. Gale Electric is based in Richland and works across the Tri-Cities, including Kennewick, Pasco, West Richland, Benton City, Burbank, Finley and Prosser. Appointments run Monday through Friday, 7AM to 5PM.
