The copper pigtail is what lands on the device. Standard twist on wire nuts, including the purple ones sold for the purpose, are not an accepted long term repair for this application.
Where devices are replaced without pigtailing, they must be rated CO/ALR, which is a listing for direct connection to aluminum.
